Artichoke Community Music leaves SE Hawthorne

Musicians rely on music stores for a variety of reasons. Lessons, sheet music, instrument repair – and it’s such a fantastic thing to have a local music store that you can visit with knowledgeable musicians to answer your questions and give support.

Unfortunately, no one is resilient to the ebbs and flows of the economy and local businesses are generally the first to get hit. While calling around to businesses, I received some shocking information. Artichoke Music will be leaving its location on 3130 SE Hawthorne Blvd at the end of May. They are hoping to open a new shop, but as of now, they do not have a location. I was advised to sign up for their email list, which you can find on the front page of their website to find out through their once-a-month newsletter what the future will hold.

Inside the front door of Artichoke Music

Artichoke Music was founded in 1971, originally located on NW 21st Street before moving to the SE Hawthorne business district. The shop has been providing guitars and other necessities to the folk music community of Portland, OR and the greater Northwest for over 35 years. Their slogan; “Building Community Through Music One Heart at a Time” is truly inspiring and a foundation that PDXBusk inspires to grow into.

While I have been assured that they will find a new concrete home, there is no information on that at this time. However, before they close, you should take advantage of events that happen there!

  • Songwriter Roundup, 7 – 10pm, $5
Songwriters are invited to put their name in the hat and play an original song as names are drawn throughout the evening. Song-lovers are invited to come and enjoy the great diversity of talent we have in our area. Each week a featured performer presents a 30 – 40 minute set as well.

  • Friday Night Coffee House, 7 – 10pm, $5
Artichoke brings in musicians from all over the Pacific Northwest for a Friday evening of local folk flavor. Each musician has apprx 30 minutes so you can experience a wide array of different styles in one evening.

  • Slow Jam, 1st & 3rd, 2 – 4pm$5
Artists new and old participate in a learning jam circle.
  • Song Circle, 2nd & 4th, 2 – 4pm, $5
This circle you can bring your instrument to, but is primarily singing. They use the ‘Rise Up Singing’ book, which can be purchased from them. Singers new and old can participate and learn together!

Steven N. from the Portland Buskers Facebook page left this comment on Thursday: “I spoke with the folks at Artichoke today. While they still say they are likely closing May 29th, they have been speaking with a local arts group and may get support to turn the space into a pure community performance venue. No details yet, but they might stick around.”
